Brad Grate Dairy Farm was cited for offering an adulterated animal for human consumption after selling a cow for slaughter that contained desfuroylceftiofur (a ceftiofur metabolite) at 2.59 ppm in kidney tissue, exceeding FDA's established tolerance of 0.4 ppm. The violation occurred when the farm sold the animal on March 31, 2021, and tissue analysis by USDA/FSIS confirmed residue levels that rendered the food unsafe under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The presence of this new animal drug residue above safe levels constituted adulteration and prohibited the introduction of the product into interstate commerce.
