Battle Creek Co-op/CHS, LLC dba Progressive Nutrition manufactured animal feed products that were adulterated due to excessive levels of urea (non-protein nitrogen), which caused the deaths of 17 cattle and prompted a voluntary recall in January 2023. An FDA-contracted inspection of the facility in Norfolk, Nebraska revealed significant violations of Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP), Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals (PCAF) regulations under 21 CFR Part 507. The inspection was triggered by a Reportable Food Registry report filed after a consumer complaint regarding cattle deaths linked to lot #M217160 of "PN 16-8-12 Mineral R-1G," with the company subsequently expanding the recall to include lot #M217170 for the same contamination issue.
