Calavo Growers, Inc. received a warning for its papaya packing and holding operation in Hawaii, where the FDA determined that papayas were adulterated due to preparation, packing, and holding under insanitary conditions. During an April 2024 inspection of a contracted grower and harvester, FDA investigators documented serious violations of the Produce Safety regulation (21 CFR Part 112), including failures related to toilet and hand-washing facilities that Calavo had committed to providing and maintaining. Despite contracting with external farms for growing and harvesting, Calavo retained responsibility for ensuring compliance with produce safety standards across its supply chain.
