The enforcement action stemmed from voluntary Class I recalls initiated in September 2023 after the company's dog food was linked to a multi-state Salmonella Kiambu outbreak that sickened seven people, including six infants under one year of age, with one hospitalization. FDA conducted two inspections (November 2023-December 2023 and January-February 2024) in response to the outbreak investigation conducted jointly with the CDC and state/local health partners, identifying compliance failures related to sanitation and contamination control in pet food manufacturing.
