WANABANA USA LLC, a food importer based in Jacksonville, Florida, failed to comply with Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) requirements under 21 CFR Part 1, Subpart L when importing apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches from its Ecuadorian supplier Austrofood S.A.S. The inspection, conducted February-March 2024, found the company did not perform adequate risk-based verification activities to ensure imported foods met U.S. food safety standards. This enforcement action was triggered by a multistate investigation and Class 1 recall initiated in October 2023 after apple cinnamon fruit puree samples intended for infants and the general public were found to contain extremely high concentrations of lead.
