Cantoro Food Market, a food importer in Michigan, failed to comply with the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) regulation when importing foods including tomato products, dried apricots, dried figs, sun-dried tomatoes, and durum wheat pasta. During a May 2022 inspection, the FDA found the company did not perform required risk-based verification activities to ensure imported foods met U.S. food safety standards, and when provided audit certificates and food safety plans from suppliers, failed to document their review or explain how these documents applied to their FSVP program. This represented a significant pattern of non-compliance, as a previous November 2019 inspection had also identified deficiencies in the company's FSVP compliance.
